T-Mobile Delays Android 1.5 Rollout & Why CupCake Is Now Defunct

Posted on May 18, 2009 by Michael Martin PMP in Service Providers, gPhones | 61 Comments

T-Mobile has posted today that the 1.5 Android CupCake release has been delayed another week so users can expect it in early June rather than Late May.

The official announcement on the T-Mobile forum was:

G1 community,

We’d like to provide an update on the rollout of Android 1.5 for T-Mobile G1 customers.

We are working diligently to get Android 1.5 out as soon as possible, while aiming to ensure a consistent, positive experience for our customers.

We’re finalizing the build this week to ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery.

Therefore, the rollout schedule has been reset by approximately a week, and we expect all G1 customers will have the update by early June.

Your device will notify you when the update is available.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Dan Morrill of Google Developer Relations also stated this week that CupCake is now a defunct name, since that milestone has passed (The next being Donut) as Android 1.5 is the actual name & version for the current Android platform release.

So where did the CupCake name originate?

Dan clarifies that,” Cupcake was the code-name for a development milestone, as well as the name for the source code branch corresponding to that milestone.

Our naming convention is currently tasty, delicious desserts, similar to how Ubuntu uses Hardy Heron, Gutsy Gibbon, and the like as their code names.

We didn’t think people would find this as amusing as they have, and it got picked up by the press more widely than we expected.”

So another week to find this all amusing as the Cupcake continues to cook in the US.

I can’t wait to get rid of this phone. I got cupcake blueballs… tired of getting teased. Other than browsing the web this phone doesn’t do anything better than any other phone. Yeah its cool that its a new os but being a beta tester isn’t. I had such high hopes for this phone too. Now I’m just dissappointed in it.

I’m soooo sick of this! Stuff like this makes me want to switch to the so called “dark-side.” This is getting ridiculous! Don’t tell us your trying to make it a “peaceful, polite transition” and your screwing up your consumers. Its like a store, if you keep selling your customers b.s. products, then they’ll go to a new store that sells the same product, and you loose customers! I might just have to either root this stupid G1, that I defend sooo proudly! Or just get an iPhone. I at least know that I won’t have problems in my market, or worry about other stuff.

It’s hard to wait for 1.5 considering it’s been out for root users for some time now! Give them a chance, my guess is that they are either waiting for developers to catch up or they found some major glitch. Don’t forget, cupcake for root users originates from google. I can’t wait to use the official release, maybe it will be better… one can only hope.

I sense a plot against G1 owners. T-Mobile is merely teasing us to the point of jail-breaking our phones. Therefore, more dummies out there will begin jailbreaking this week to increase the odds of root failure! I will never turn to the dark side!

Or maybe tmobile is doing this so all thse non believers, traitors and hyprocrits can let go of the g1 and go to this “iphone” tht I been hearing about. The iphone been out for 2 years and in 2 month it will finaly get mms.the g1 been out for 6month and the next update wil have mms and more that the iphone has not provided.oh did I mention tht they still showing us theirs a future for the g1? Donut?ecliar? Cmon people.the iphone showing consumers NEW PHONES rather than fixing their pre releases.for all u whiners who disown the g1 for this shit, grow up and have a nice day,

i bought g1 cuz i thought i needed a real keyboard for my trading on the go. i also thought flash would be on it sooner than later. i guess i got tricked. I dont really care much for cupcake but this is getting stupid. I am sure Iphone users probably going thru the same thing with update releases but fuck atleast they’re waiting with a nice looking phone. We have to put up with this junks on a ugly mofo phone that doesn’t do anything differently then the nicest looking phone out there. The contract aint that cheaper…the phone bout the same price with iphone. The math doesn’t add up for me now.

And this open platform is a scam…seem like everyone has a saying and control this android thingy. It has to be ok by all the parties for anything to be done. Maybe that’s why there’s a delay. I rather have one mofo that make a decision and run with it.

Ofcourse if anyone interest in buying my G1 please contact me. I only want enough money to pay off my contract.

    Hahahaha @ all you whiners
I pre-odered my G1 an was impatient for cupcake so i rooted it but i wasnt all whiney like some of you guys (no disrespect). All i hear is “Im selling my G1″ or “Im getting the Iphone” or some comparison to iphone but lets not forget that the Iphone took basically 3 years to have an update that allows MMS,Copy & Paste and video recording as appose to the G1 only taking a mere 8 months. Also the G1 wasnt supposed to be better than the Iphone it was supposed to open the door for the Android OS to take the lead on Iphone. The 1st of anything is never gonna knock out a rival especially when it was released b4 it was really finished.
Root takes like 15 minutes and you get apps2sd like me so stop whining and go root or wait.I dont know why your all so hiped to get cupcake as it will take your memory down to 39MB by just updating it.That doesnt leave much room for apps and your G1 will no doubt act much slower unless you reboot multiple times per day. With root you make your own space an have all your internal memory (I have 70 apps and 73MB out of 74MB of internal memory).Just go root via xda or youtube video like me.And last if you guys are so hyped for cupcake then whats gonna happen when they release the Donut update? Oh wait your G1 with the Donut update (baring google coming up with a way to save apps2sd)will probably take you G1s memory down another 35MB like cupcake does an if you do the math you’ll have 4MB left hahaha, nahhh im just teasing have patience an for Donut it wont take another 35MB it will just on top of the cupcake subtraction it’ll just replace it so you’ll just be left with anywhere from 35-39MB of free space. :)

Man I have never seen so much bitching about a freakin update! “I want an Iphone, I’m sick of this and sick of that.” Please do everyone a favor and sell your damn phones. Do half of you people realize how difficult programming can be? Or do you realize the Google developers are busting their asses to get out a quality update? Not to mention us G1 users can actually SMS. I could care less that I can take video on my phone, I mean I think I used it a total of 4 times on my last phone. Yes an update would kick ass but does anyone remember the good ol days when we used our phones to talk and do light surfing. For all of us who can wait for the update, I’m sure it will be worth it. For the rest that are sick of waiting go buy an iPhone and come back and bitch cuz you can’t SMS or you are paying out the ass for apps that you might use once.

If this goes on for much longer, I’m gonna start downloading those Marketplace crapware apps that my friend Khalid keeps posting. I think he just changed his name to Perfect Acumen – he’s gone, but like magic, the new company’s now selling his old crapware, same program names, just posting them under a different name.

And second of all since you love nokia or iphone so much sell ur G1 then! As the other guy said I can’t wait to stand in line with the other G1 guys laughing at u after we got our cupcake or dounut.

And cmon don’t tell me you cant wait A WEEK more? Unless you tell me ur gonna die this week and cupcake is one of the things on your death wishes then go over to the darkside and do it manually.

I’m writing this via the 1.5 fimware(cupcake). Tried using the on-screen keyborad and honestly I do not know why anyone would want it.too hard to type wit any on-screen.anyways.bad thing about this UK version is:

    No live folder
No system controlls that were mentioned that the firmware will have like the ability to change the action of what the end button would do if u press it (make the phone sleep or exit from an app, etc)

Iam pretty sure the U.S. update will have more features, which I don’t understand why don’t they just do it all alike for all the countires. Ah the web surfing seems to better but for some reason its a little laggy.I think its because a lot of things are running in the background.hm. good update to be honest, shows a future for android. I caan not express enough how well the phone is running now. I’m sure the reason the update has been postponed is because they are planning to add something else, because for some reason I feel something is missing with this update. Not app2sd, I don’t believe that feature will be avaible soon.but there is something small but imp missing.

Oh the. Defualt music app interface rocks! Its all alien greeny lol

The delay is giving US developers a little more time. Saying that the US servers can’t handle the update is obserd. If the UK servers can I’m sure the US can so if nothing more we should be thankful that the developers get a little more time to perfect their apps before the release.

HONESTLY, I’ve learned to absorb rumors and then release them just as quickly. I would LOVE to have Android 1.5 now, but unfortunately it’s not ready. Hey, maybe it will have more features… And there goes another rumor. Which I will still kindly retreat from as soon as I see the exact same update thousands have already recieved weeks ago. It’s NOT that we’re getting the update late that has everyone up tight. IT’s that we’re being teased. Truthfully, If I’d never known or heard about cupcake… I probably wouldn’t even care. But I did. This phone is, as stated before, to get the android platform out there! And does anyone remember the POS iphone that first came out?…everyone needs to just stop complaining and maybe ya know encourage t mobile/google. All of you threatening to switch to iphones or even nokias, go right ahead…bc its people like you that are killing this phone and you need to join the apple icrap clan now…how do you think those threats make google and t-mo feel?…if i were them reading all of this, i wouldnt give a rats “behind” about us anymore bc of all the complaining and crying…

Come on guy’s, give me a break! The G1 is THE phone to have! It has the best keyboard available on any phone in the US market! Once 1.5 is out the only lacking features in my mind is an equaliser, auto spell check, apps2SD, video out & Flash(which no phone has yet). If you can’t wait (which I can), then just root, by the way why is rooting called the darkside?
I plan on keeping this phone for years to come and am very happy that an update to 1.5 is already under development! Google & T-Mobile, keep up the good work!
The only way I’d switch phones is if a phone with the features listed above a better keyboard more internal memory a faster CPU/GPU 4G network, comes out. So until then which will most likely be years, I’ll be sticking with the G1! If you don’t feel the same way and can’t wait, go ahead, throw away your money on a more expensive lesser phone that won’t have any updates and only has a crappy onscreen keyboard! Then you’ll really have something to complain about!!!

Hey guys i think i figured out why T-Mobile delayed the patch. I just received an update FROM Google, not T-Mobile, for a security patch. I received both updates on both of my G1 phones, and my girl got as well. I am in Egypt so thats why maybe no one has reported it yet seeing Egypt is about 8 to 9 hours in front of the U.S. times and a few hours ahead the U.K.

It said ” Security patch update by Google For the 1.5 Firmware”. I think they found a security flaw on the 1.5 firmware (maybe the widgets? my phone been going crazy since these widgets, plus they have so much access). They sending out all the updates to all G1 users who already have the 1.5 firmware.

I just went through my phone to see if anythings new. I am able to find only two things new:

System Tutorial: A step to step tutorial on how to use your Android Phone.

“Use Tactile feedback: When putting the pattern to unlock your phone, your phone will vibrate each time you touch a dot. I find this helpful because sometimes i would think i touched the dots but i would’ve have.

Got my 1.5 update from androidcommunity.com. no fuss, no mess – no root or cpu needed. Not impressed with updates. Want and need flash.

    theres alot that they updated..
most of it was system updates
like you can make the keyboard use the auto complete when you spacebar. the soft keyboard isnt as good at fixing words like the iphone but you can type on it.
also gmail is so much more effective. batch delete and previews of pics are directly in the email.
gtalk has become its own app.
    IM messengers still suck lol.
    cosmetic changes.
theres alot theyve changed but i have also noticed that the phone lags more now…maybe its because the memory is getting low? in that case someone needs to make a way to load apps from a sd card.
