Wall Street Journal Outs Google Paid Apps Android Market Plans

Posted on Feb 10, 2009 by Michael Martin in Applications, Developers, Open Handset Alliance | 8 Comments

The Wall Street Journal let slip that Google’s Android Market will be allowing paid apps this week.

TalkAndroid and T-Mobile forum members did a great job noticing this at the end of an article on Microsoft bolstering its mobile strategy.

In The Wall Street Journal article ends by stating Google will also energize its developers by offering a means of payment this week in the Android Market.

Google, too, hosts an application store, dubbed the Android Market, for phones running its Android mobile operating system, the first of which is the G1 from Deutsche Telekom AG’s T-Mobile USA. This week Google will start allowing developers to charge for software sold through the Android Market, according to people familiar with the matter.”

Speaking of paying developers … when is the Android Developer Challenge 2 supposed to begin as it was slated for late 2008???

I would have thought that Google would try to push “Cupcake”out (if it is really coming to the G1) before paid apps… seeing as this could change the dynamics of certain apps that might go up for sale on the market…

I was really hoping the cupcake changes were in RC33 but I’m realizing now that it’s a good thing they weren’t because we developers wouldn’t have enough time between then and the pay app deployment to get anything real done.

Speaking of which, if you like word games, try out Wuzzle. It’ll be on the pay app market for $1.99 and will be well worth it!!

Do you realize that none of your predictions in your “most popular” posts ever came to pass? No new battery, no cupcake, not the first time, or second. I am even doubting the veracity of paid apps, only because I saw it posted here.

I was going to keep my comments to myself until I saw that you rated a fart-app as one of the best of February. In doing so, you are acting as an enabler for these puerile developers, and therefore responsible for the flooding of the market with juvenile apps. Not to mention, your wrong post about cupcake lead to a frenzy of comments within the app store inquiring about cupcake. The only thing I can’t blame you for is the “first” meme, but only for lack of evidence. My point is that you should be more cognizant of what you post.

Developers are submitting paid apps as of last week, but are not yet available to end users.

The Android Market blog states “initially, priced applications will be available to end users in the US starting mid next week.”

    So around Wed Feb 18th.
