UK G1 Owners to Get RC9 Android Firmware 1.1 Update Soon

Posted on Mar 3, 2009 by Michael Martin in Applications, gPhones | 31 Comments

UK G1 phone owners may now be finally getting caught up to the Android firmware update that was provided to US G1 phones nearly a month ago.

G1 owners in mainland Europe have been reporting in ModMyGphone on Monday that they are receiving the RC9 Android update which is similar to the RC33 update already provided to the US.

Early reports today indicate the RC9 update is finally being sent out in the UK bringing those phones up to Android firmware 1.1 which is needed to purchase paid applications in the Android Market.

Now that the US, Europe, and soon the UK will have access to the paid Android Market there should be some auto currency conversion based on where the user is so one doesn’t have to do a mental conversion of the price with all the different currencies currently shown.

So this would just leave the $400 And Dev 1 phones out of the paid Android Market since being blocked out shortly after the Holiday Update.

Anyone in the UK received the RC9 update yet?

Yep, got it last night. There really isn’t a lot different apart from the paid apps support and a few minor menu tweaks. Fingers crossed we’ll get better updates once the G2 is launched…

I got the update this evening. Hard to tell what’s new. Market place is not beta anymore.

Not sure if this was a 1.0 feature, but it seems that plain text emails are linked in the browser. Let’s test it:

    fakeemailz@gmail.com

Would be nice if Google could release a list of items included in the update.

About flipping time too, not to impressed with T-Mobile as I live in the country and coverage is patchy at best or not at all.

Some people may have the RC9 update but not here, still on RC8.

I received the update on March the 2nd in the UK. Apart from th market place no noticable difference. A changelog would be useful. Also useful would be latitude which i thought was part of the next upgrade

I manually downloaded the update to my PC and upgraded from the SD card, so am also on RC9.

As above, no major changes – it is nice that you can mark comments in the Market as spam – but other than that, nothing.

Disappointed that Latitude isn’t available on the phone either – despite the Maps app now showing as version 3. I would love to know Google / T-Mobile’s reasoning sometimes!!!

I have UK G1 in Czech republic, running czech Telefonica O2 network and I have received RC9 today OTA, no need to update manually. Just be patient, they will find you in Austria as well… :-)
But honestly, there is no need for this dissapointing update, almost nothing has changed…

You can also save picture messages and such, which was not possible before. What you do is hold your finger on the messagetill a list shows and there is now an option to copy attached to SD card. Hope This Helps.

Is it true this RC9 update in the UK does NOT include Google Voice Search? (as WAS included in the US)

Shocking update! No Voice Search, no Latitude and no paid apps (though I guess this may not be ready for the UK market). What has really surprised me is still the lack of the Amazon MP3 shop support. Don’t T-Mobile UK and Amazon have the same deal as the US?

What is nice to see is a quick list of all your installed applications and any new updates.

I really feel like a second class customer compared to the US. I believe the European market is 3 times bigger than the US!!!!!

Got it this morning, and I can confirm that:

    - There is NO voice search
    - Market place > My downloads – now indicates if updates are available for your installed apps (the best feature of this update in my opinion)
    - Check for phone updates option now available

    RC9 ??
Having got the update I can see why T-Mobile UK wouldn’t comment on it before it’s release. ‘There was NOTHING worth commenting on’
Perhaps the message from Googlw/T-Mobile is, ‘it’s open source go do it yourself’!
I will certainly be watching the forums looking for proper and useful ‘upgrades’.

I now have the RC9 upgrade, Latitude is on there but only on the Google Browser using “Gears” you can implement it or not. No virtual keyboard, I am a little underwhelmed by the upgrade, I would agree about the pop email issue.
I was expecting a lot more and it is colouring my attitude to the whole phone.

A contract for eighteen months I cannot get out off and a far to high tariff for my use £250 pounds worth of credit per month, I did ask if I could change it but nada as they say.

If the cupcake branch is open sourced. Why can’t someone get the onscreen keyboard to the phone. Is it so difficult (that was an innocent question)

Well about the onscreen keyboard, you can have one by using ChompSMS or some other sms app that is in the market. need one for the browser? use steel, its an amazing browser. what else would you need a virtual keyboard for?

Yes this phone is open source, but i mean no one has given Google a decent chance yet. the phone been out since October,December is when the platform started to improve and get better. its only been barely 3 month that this phone could be considered “in the market”. patience is needed to achieve the best from the best. this phone, or platform more like it will sprout and blossom. just needs the right amount of rain and sunlight (TIME!). you might later on get a better android phone, but because this is opensource, most android systems will be all alike, just the difference in hardware and looks!

I believe this is a live test update so when firmware 1.2 is rolled out you can force check 4 updates rather then “root” your g1, could you imagine if europe replyied quoting this not working that not working, be patient and the force will soon be with u scotty.

Hint: press, menu, about, check 4 updates, to download firmware 1.2 after g2 is released, by q2 this year.

Seems like this update took so long as they were removing all the good things from rc33 before it came to the uk. My GPS has ceased to work properly to. I am so down on this phone now. All the things its supposed to be good at mean that its battery lasts less than an hour. If you keep it just as a telephone it will last a day. pointless

So if i’m correct the RC33 upgrade also has a language package but not the RC9 upgrade we received ?
I live in Belgium , got my phone in Poland so a dutch package with T9 would be handy for me to type my messages quicker . And David your right the battery lasts not even a day !!

    @Lexi,

This is the new 1.5 Cupcake CRB17 update in the UK.

I wrote about it in http://www.googleandblog.com/london-g1-phones-cupcake/3906/

The US should get it next week according to T-Mobile.
