How to Get the T-Mobile G1 for the Cheapest Price and Save Money

Posted on Oct 29, 2008 by Michael Martin PMP in gPhones | 37 Comments

I have the methodology to get the first Google Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, for approximately 50% off the current price while also getting it before the holidays.

Those that wanted the first G1 Android phones from T-Mobile had to pay the debut price of $179 plus fees and taxes that pushed the final purchase price to well over $200.

Of course you can 25% off by getting the G1 at Walmart in the near future for $148.88 but why stop there?

*** The local Walmart in San Diego told me that the regional managers had a meeting yesterday regarding the G1 and that they will be in stores on or around November 10th NOT today as was reported in CNN. ***

T-Mobile retailers DO price match only upon purchase and if you provide them a circular advertising a lower price BUT Walmart has at least a 30 day price match and most importantly is the only national store that will price match on Black Friday.

Why is this important?

You can buy the G1 at Walmart when available thus avoid waiting in line at dawn and the mad rush once the doors open while just as quickly going out of stock the dramatically marked down G1s – approximately priced around $100 -  which inevitably Walmart and or Best Buy will do on Black Friday - November 28th.

As Black Friday is less than 30 days from now you can simply wake up at a decent hour in the morning after Thanksgiving, avoid the mass of people scouring the aisles, and walk to the near empty service area and present your receipt with a Black Friday circular and get your 50% plus savings off the G1.

*** CNN reports, “If retailers don’t have shoppers bursting through their doors on Black Friday then they’ll be in big trouble by the end of January,” said Britt Beemer, retail analyst and chairman of America’s Research Group.

Beemer said it’s Wal-Mart’s Black Friday discounts that he and many other consumers will be waiting for.

Wal-Mart’s prices will set the floor on where prices will be on toys, electronics and other holiday items” ***

GREAT article. I had been planning for months as to how I would buy a service plan for a G1 but lacked a hardware strategy. Now I have one! Thanks!

I went to 2 local walmarts in the 3g area of Balto, Md and neither carried the g1 and infact, the “associates” were confused as to what I was asking for! I will now wait for the hype to slow down before reconsidering the HTC product. My bags were packed; but no train was available!

Great idea, but what if walmart does not discount this particular phone on black friday?

    @ Darek,

I am fairly confident one of the G1 distributors will price it down to $100 on or around Black Friday and stil be within 30 days of your purchase.

Worst case scenario you save 25% off the current price.

How many retailers are going to stock the G1 after Black Friday? Is it just the two?

The only other realtor that will be selling the G1 this year beyond Walmart and Best Buy is Radio Shack…that I am aware of.

    Maybe more on saving money…
T-Mobile purchased Suncom and has allowed previous Suncom customers to keep their unplan but the unplan supposedly can’t be used when upgrading to a G1 phone. I heard a rumor that people are buying the G1 and with a little help from t-mobile customer service are able to get it to work with the unplan. Since the unplan only costs ~$50/month this could be a nice savings over standard t-mobile plans. Does anyone have more information on this? Thanks.

this is a disgrace! you people are going to go through all of that just to get the g1 for 100? the phone is already price much lower then it should be and you are still looking to get it cheaper? i am an commision sales person for tmobile and this is how i support myself and my family just in case you didnt realize! so when i see the blueprint to how to get the g1 cheaper then 180 it makes me sick to my stomache! whoever listens to this guy and goes through all of this for a “cell phone” is insane! and know that you are keeping the economy down by screwing up commision for a normal guy like me who has a family to support!

Seriously? Maybe you should switch jobs.

There’s nothing wrong with working to get the best deal-and if someone wants to ‘go through all that’ to save $79, well–its their perogative.

This may be harsh-but you sound like a whiney salesperson. Just work harder and sell more, and you’ll make more money–dont expect us (consumer) to pay more for a product we can get for less so that your commission check will be higher so that you can feed your family.

maybe if you learn how to spell you wouldnt be working on commission at t-mobile

correct spelling: "commission" and "stomach" and also whoever is two words…

oh and if you are only making commission at a tmobile owned store and not an authorized dealer you should really look for another job.. I was making over a grand every two weeks PLUS commission when i worked for t-mobile in HIGHSCHOOL……

The Black Friday price match has been upheld at Walmart for the last several years including last year, which is when I tested it out to confirm.

As the T-Mobile rep knows this is their (and HTC’s) window of price gouging opportunity from the impatient early birds as Google wants to flood the market with these phones.

Then when this supply valve is opened up via these multiple vendors the price will stone drop.

We can safely ignore the troll’s histrionics.

By the way, to answer the question up above, only 550 Walmarts, nationally, will be carrying the G1. Most will be getting them after today, through November 10.

That Suncom deal, by the way, sounds really fantastic, although slightly out of what I’m willing to pay. I was hoping to get a monthly, “unlimited” data plan and a pre-paid voice plan. It’s my intention to use the data plan to make phone calls.

If it weren’t for the disabling of voice over IP services, you could use VoIP and Grandcentral to make free calls from any WiFi spot. As it stands, we’re going to have to flatten the custom Android installation to get rid of those nasty restrictions.

    @ B.Baker,

To my knowledge T-Mobile will not price match after purchase but will only price match at the POINT of purchase if you provide the actual circular advertising a lower price.

I’m not really understanding this, but i’m definitely interested seeing as though I work at wal-mart. So you’re saying that Wal-mart will be seeling the G1 for $100 on Black Friday? If so, this is great news seeing as though we get 20% discounts that day.

Price for the G1 is now $179.88 at Wal-Mart, not the rumored $148.88. Checked at a store in Austin Texas.

Also, I asked about price matching the phones if Wal-Mart did drop them in 30 days, and the Manager said that the price match did not apply to cell phones.

I know the prices vary on the G1 depending on which Walmart store you go.

I did have a concern that cell phones would be ommitted from the price match, but generally they do give it to you regardless, if you are persistent enough.

Also as a note that competition and pricing is heating up, T-Mobile will be offering free companion flights with no blackout dates if you reup with them for 2 years and get the G1.

    @ Ruben,

It looks like the best deal is for a new T-Mobile customer to sign up via the Freelancers Union for a $139 G1 – unfortunately existing users cant get that same rate – although the 10% off your monthly bill can be provided.

Today I had a local T-Mobile store in San Diego price match the G1 Freelancers Discount rate of $139.99 plus removing all frees even though I was upgrading my phone as a current T-Mobile customer.

THANK YOU RUBEN! – I cited you in my followup post on this at http://www.googleandblog.com/best-deal-tmobile-g1-google-android-phone/3270/

I have signed up for Freelancers Union but none of the stores were willing to price match with me. A store sales manager told me to check out the price in Walmart because they got the phone through a different wholesaler. I ended up at a Walmart and you know what….they are offering the G1 for $98.88 w/ 2-yr contract (same price for both new activation and upgrade). I upgraded my phone and I didn’t even have to pay the upgrade fee. Also I called in for the 10% discount and Could get it.

So I am all satisfied now.

Hope it helps somebody who are trying to get the G1.=)
