symbian foundation

The newest members of the Symbian Foundation were announced today July 10th, 2008 which include Marvell and TIM joining such companies as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, AT&T, LG, Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Vodafone as it now equals the membership total of the Open Handset Alliance.

Currently Symbian is just a mobile phone operating system based in the UK, while LiMo is just middleware, but Google Android is both an OS and middleware plus more.

The Symbian Foundation in June 2008 decided to expand Symbian beyond just an OS and to provide its open source software royalty-free to other phone makers in order to blunt the expansion of Android as well the headstart iPhone has.
