Slick Phone is What the First Google Android Phone Should Have Been

Posted on Oct 30, 2008 by Michael Martin in gPhones | 1 Comments

The Slick concept phone is the portable media device that should have been the first Google Android phone that would have overshadowed the iPhone out of the gate.

This Slick phone was designed by Jorge L Gonzalez out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida who has a degree in Industrial Design so I hope some mobile manufacturers are taking note of whats seen here.

I am a believer in Android, but the G1 for me has a lot left to be desired, although I would not go as far as Al Sutton bashing the G1 in his blog and who has been very vocal in the Android Google Groups.

What has hedged me from purchasing the G1 right away beyond the initial product teething woes are:

  1. No video recording
  2. Keyboard is uncentered and cumbersome to use - sturdier frame and elevated keys would help
  3. Less than 512MB of RAM/ROM which limits the speed and breadth of future applications
  4. No standard 3.5mm headset port
  5. Not the most stylish or ergonomic hence why I call it the programmers Geek Phone
  6. Weak battery with only 5 hours of actual use - needs better process and resource efficiency
  7. Picture taking is poor
  8. No landscape mode when the keyboard is not exposed
  9. Minuscule internal storage - 70MB - especially as Ed Hardy points out within Brighthand that the removable 1 to 16GB memory card can NOT store applications
  10. Moore’s Law combined with the knowledge that the Android phones coming out in the first half of 2009 will be cheaper, better, and scalable.

If the G1 was the Slick phone I would have pre-ordered at whatever reasonable price, but instead I may end up getting the G1 around Black Friday as it hits $99 with the batch that has the white paint and initial hardware software issues resolved.

For me both the terrible camera and laggy touch screen are major design flaws in the G1. However it’s really par for the course from HTC. They really need to find better components.

Dave Jeyess last blog post..Want an unlocked Android G1? That’ll be $399
