London G1 Phones Calling & Gets Cupcake – US Will Take Crumpets

Posted on May 6, 2009 by Michael Martin in Service Providers, gPhones | 29 Comments

G1 Android phones in the UK are now getting the latest CupCake release 1.5 CRB17 as of today.

Earlier this week approximately 1,000 UK G1s received the test roll out before this mass release.

The last release which was RC33 in US took over a month before then being provided to the UK G1 phones.

Hopefully the returning wave of this CupCake update does not return the favor by taking over a month to arrive in the United States.

So far the G1s in the US with CupCake look to be And Dev 1 phones or rooted phones updating via JesusFreke.

*** T-Mobile Speaks up to say the US will get the 1.5 CupCake update by Friday May 15th HERE***

If the OTA has not reached you in the United Kingdom you can manually upload it here from AndBlogs and then:

  • Save it to the SD card and name it update.zip
  • Reboot your phone in recovery modeĀ  – Continue to hold the HOME button when restarting until the warning image
  • Then Press Alt-L if you want to view logging
  • Finally press Alt-S to apply the update

    Would a US user just be able to download the above update file and do the same? Or would that be a bad thing?

    I would hold off so as to not tempt fate with any problems since it will only be a week of waiting.

    Great question though as I was wondering the same thing.

    Got the update this morning. All in all it’s very good. Couple of things that I don’t like are;

    1) The screen rotation works nicely when moving from landscape to portrait but takes ages going the other way.

    2) To uninstall an app I now have to reinstall it and then uninstall as there is no uninstall button until I do this.

    As a general comment the screen keyboard is nice but I wouldn’t want to have to rely solely on that for text input.

    @ipb,

    Funny I noticed that in the Google walk through video for Android 1.5 when the keyboard switches rotation it took an embarrassingly long time for a promo video.

    The Marketplace does seem to forget about which apps you have installed which is annoying, particularly for updates. You can still uninstall pre-update apps, however, via the Application Manager in Settings.

    Thanks for the news!

    I am also predicting that it will come out for the US on May 15th or 22nd. My logic is that it is about three-to-four weeks after the 1.5 SDK came out. I think they want to give developers sufficient time to update their apps so that way not only will the developers be happy (by not being rushed) the majority of Android users won’t call t-mo and complain about the update ruining everything.

    Makes sense for both. I think that is the biggest thing holding the update back, the people who call and complain and don’t know anything about the developing of apps.

    T-Mobile said the hold up in the US is purely for the developers to update their apps to work with 1.5

    I’m not trying to be a butthole or anything but am i the only one that notices that T-mobile/Google really messed everything up? Think about it, we all are going crazy for the last 6 month waiting for the “cupcake” updates. What does the update have? EVERYTHING A PHONE SHOULD HAVE HAD AT THE BEGINNING. Stereo blue tooth is on every phone i encounter till now, even my old crappy Nokia that has 1 mega pix camera. Virtually keyboard was commonsense to come with the phone. Video recording is also on my crappy Nokia phone, and it says on the box it comes with it! i mean i am more pissed about the fact that T MOBILE is making a big fuss about it, they should be apologizing rather than congratulating. I love the G1 and am a loyal android user, just hate this propaganda

    @Abdel,

    I hear what you are saying, but truth be told we all should know we are part of the BETA program when getting the G1.

    I knew this going in so tough for me to bitch – at least the G1 isn’t getting forgotten about as upgrades happen – hopefully that continues w the new phones coming out.

    Just received the update. Really pleased with it so far. Scrolling through photos is much snappier, the camera is better, camcorder is nice but I doubt I’ll use it much. On screen keyboard is cool but I’m so used to the keypad that it’s difficult to get used to. Biggest benefit for me is my WIFI WORKS AGAIN, having completely failed since the last update. Couple of apps have been force closing though including Power Manager.

    I know this may have been asked before but I haven’t come across a definitive answer. Can you be on Wi-Fi and still receive the update? The reason I ask is because at night I like to listen to Stream Furious, and I would like to know if I should turn off Wi-Fi for a night. I can handle not having my radio but I must say that Stream Furious is probably one of favorite programs. :-)
    Also thanks in advance for answers!

    Ya you can receive the update if you have Wifi on, all you need to be is a T-Mobile customer.

    @ Michael: i agree, i really hope the G1 stays updated while the new phones roll out. I do see the G1 progressing much faster than the I phone ( 2 years and still no MMS).

    Anyone who has the update already: hows the video recording/camcorder? I download the video recording app from the market this morning, to be honest i am surprised is free. It works very very well, great quality. Just the video frame is a little slow that is all. But not bad to be honest.
