Bill Hughes, from the market research firm In-Stat, predicts in 2009 Google Android phones will have 17.1 million units sold which is almost twice the predicted amount of iPhones at 9.5 million – with the help of China.

If you have a spare $1,495 you can read Mr. Hughes research analysis on iPhone and gPhone: Shaking Up the Wireless World at In-Stat or simply view the highlights I made below.

Ten Reasons China will want a gPhone over an iPhone:

  • China’s 3G standard TD-SCDMA will most likely support mobile Linux platforms
  •

  • China Mobile is part of the Open Handset Alliance that is working on Android with Google
  •

  • China’s preference toward free, open-source software, given its nascent intellectual property laws
  •

  • A high-quality FREE operating system
  •

  • Android can be used on a variety of devices
  •

  • Linux-based handsets are cheap and easily customized
  •

  • Google’s presence in China since 2005
  •

  • Google’s acquiescence to China’s Internet censorship laws
  •

  • Google has the reputation of a company the Chinese government can work with
  •

  • Google Branding

Over half the Chinese population still don’t have a cell phone by mid 2007 and with their proposed affinity to Android’s open-source mobile Linux platform, states Hughes, by 2012 Android phones will outsell the iPhone by 3 to 1 with a number given of 96.9 million units to 33.4 million.

Another prediction for 2012 were by the Mayans but their prediction is not a pleasant one for December 21st, 2012.
