I have been skeptical on Google ever making its own Google phone but what the London Times reports does sound interesting and makes some sense.
I have chosen previously to ignore all the rumors of a Google phone with a mindset similar to Rob Jackson at Phandroid as it doesn’t fit Google’s business model to be a manufacturer and it would subvert its relationships with actual device manufacturers and service providers in building its Android base.
Then Michael Arrington threw his reputation along with TechCrunch behind the latest Google Phone rumors although it could be another Punk’d episode as Facebook did with its photo faxing option.
Now with some more details from the London Times it seems to make more sense although I remain skeptical with my contacts in Google having no clue on it.
The Google Phone is reported to have a processor almost twice as fast as the one powering Apple’s iPhone 3GS and with the Flan Android release would enable the phone to render high-speed 3-D gaming.
It does make more sense that it would actually be manufactured by HTC but like most of its current Android phones having “with Google” stamped on the back then its not a stretch to ultimately have one branded with “Google Phone“.
Now it can have this branding since its speculated to not require a mobile service carrier as it would be using Google Voice along with its recent acquisition of Gizmo5 allowing calls to run over VOIP.
Now the missing link is how the phone would work when there is not WiFi service as well I am doubtful on it being released in early 2010.
Although a Google Phone could conceivably be ready as a giveaway to attendees at next years Google I/O 2010 on May 19th! ![]()
connectivity comes from white space..google is trying to get whitespace technology by year end and would include in its chromeOS netbooks and also android powered Gphone…Then the whole game will change.
Good point and would fill the missing piece needed for a VOIP anywhere Google Phone.
wow, i hadn't thought about white spaces. really good point.
mind=blown.
I wonder if Verizon upping the cost of their termination fee goes with this as well? Maybe Google gave Verizon a heads up and they wanted to lock in as many smartphone users as they could?
I believe service providers are most out of the loop on Android while also the least wanted bedfellow of Google in particular.
Verizon is most likely eying increased subscriber share from the one two punch of Android now and the iPhone in 2010 – IMHO.
The manufacturers themselves would have the most heads up so they would be the ones trying to gouge the service providers for as much as they can – hence the Motorola CLIQ inexcusably being well over $100 to subscribers.

Yes the "Google Phone/Tablet" will have a Beta sticker but you can take it off after 3 years like most other Google services.
