Sergey Brin Hints Google Chrome May Merge Into Android

Posted on Sep 2, 2008 by Michael Martin in Anything Android | 3 Comments

Sergey Brin, co-founder and president of technology at Google, stated that he could foresee merging elements of Chrome into Android and even a Chrome Lite at the official Chrome roll out in Google headquarters today.

Chrome is heralded this week as a PC browser, but critical components of the software has significant advantages within mobile devices.

One of them is the open-source Webkit Web page rendering engine which is already being used in Android.

Another is the new Javascript virtual machine, V8, which according to Lars Bak, technical lead for the V8 design at Google, “One way you can use V8 is to gain more performance, but another way is to reduce processor power.” – tests showing it is more than ten times as fast as the Javascript engine in Internet Explorer.

The Chrome and Android projects have been running in parallel but Sergey added, “In another month or two, after they have both come out and we have had time to take a breath, we can think about subsequent versions of Android that may use more elements of Chrome.”

I could even imagine we may have a Chrome Lite.”

He also reaffirms that, “We still expect Android phones out by the end of the year. I have been using them, and they look good.”

i’m willing to try it out just to see if it works more efficiently than FireFox… if it’s faster than Firefox, has tabs and isn’t IE, then i’ll use it
