Google Android Ion Phone AKA Magic myTouch 3G Battery Keeps Going & Going

Posted on Jun 8, 2009 by Michael Martin in gPhones | 16 Comments

The Android Ion Phone from Google IO which is similar to the upcoming myTouch 3G has a battery life when compared to the G1 that just keeps going and going.

I have been away from blogging here at GoogleAndBlog due to speaking at the Internet Marketing conference SMX Advanced in Seattle most of last week as I slowly had reassurance not to check my phone for the red blinking battery dying light.

Since Google IO almost 2 weeks ago I have just charged my Ion Phone 3 times as opposed to my G1 which I would have to charge multiple times in 1 day.

As a note, I didn’t enable GPS and have the screen brightness down to the minimum same as I would with my G1 previously.

The battery is 1340mAh vs the 1150mAh on the G1 – over 100 hours more standby time according to the specs.

Since I have over a week to actually use the phone I felt its better to provide a review now than just an initial impression out of the box or a canned review seen anywhere else.

The Ion does perform much faster than the G1 with a more efficient processor and increased internal memory of 288MB RAM and 512MB ROM vs the 192 MB RAM and 256 ROM of the G1.

*** The Ion ironically has a slightly older processor Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 MHz vs the Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz but IS more efficient in battery life and provides better video recording – as with the increased memory actually performs better than the G1. ***

The Android engineers at Google IO told me this phone which they call Magic or Sapphire has a much better chance to handle FLASH when available on Android than the G1.

It also came embedded with the same CupCake update everyone by now should have on the G1 but is over 1.5 ounces lighter.

Oddly it did NOT include an IM application except Google Talk.

The down side is I am not a big fan of the onscreen keyboard as my typing speed has gone down multi-fold as I wish it had a pop down keyword like the Palm Pre.

Overall if you are not a heavy text, IM, or Twitter and want a little more memory, speed, and a sleeker look then I would suggest to you the myTouch 3G coming out this summer in the US.

Does anyone know whether the Magic’s battery can be used in a Dream / G1?

I still love my G1 something will always come out that is better and faster but atleast I can say I was there when Android landed :-)
Only time will tell which phones do get Flash and who knows they may still find a way to do it for the G1. Overall this has been the best phone I have ever owned and the things I can do with it never cease to amaze me.

Who told you the Magic has a more efficient processor? From the HTC spec sheet the G1 has a more modern processor and the Magic uses an older processor which the one in the G1 superceeded (yes, I know this sounds the wrong way round, but look at the spec sheet and check the data sheets for the CPUs).

    Al,

You are correct that the Ion as well the Magic, G2, myTouch has a slightly older processor Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 MHz vs the Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz but newer doesn’t mean better.

The processor is slightly older but IS more efficient in battery life and provides better video recording – and with the increased memory actually performs better than the G1.

    Hi Michael,

I checked HTC’s World wide site and UK site, the HTC Magic original(already selling in Hongkong & Taiwan) uses Qualcomm® MSM7200A, with 288MB RAM; while the Magic for Vodafone uses Qualcomm® MSM7201A, and its RAM size is only 192MB.

    Check the following links
    http://www.htc.com/www/product/magic/specification.html
    http://www.htc.com/uk/product/magic/specification.html

So, I guess the Magic for T-Moile has the same hardware spec as the HTC Magic original.

    @William,

I spoke to an HTC rep about this yesterday and the initial reply was that listing the 7200A on http://www.htc.com/www/product/magic/specification.html was a mistake and all Magic type phones has the 7201A processor.

When I asked for confirmation of this for the Ion & the upcoming myTouch 3G in the US he stated he would get back to me – which I have not heard a response since.

Hey! I got one of these 4000 google ions, but when I took it to my home country (chile) I couldnt make the 3g work, it would only work on edge. Do you know how to configure this properly? Thank You!

since the Google I/O Developer’s conference was in California and they offered a free month of t mobile service the phone is set up internally to run on the t mobile 3g usa network which is a different frequency thank overseas 3g bands. that it why you can only pick up edge.

I got a T-Mobile Wing (HTC) from a guy off of Craigslist who upgraded to the G1. (I’m a Mac, my phone is a PS) My Wing recently started freezing up on me every time I use it and I don’t want to change phone

carriers. A friend of mine owns a Samsung HTC phone from another carrier and likes the customizable features on it which are similar to Android. I just pre-ordered the myTouch 3G today. Looking for more
