Android Cupcake Ingredients & How to Bake It Into the G1 Phone

Posted on Jan 23, 2009 by Michael Martin in Open Handset Alliance, Service Providers, gPhones | 12 Comments

Everyone with a G1 has picked up on the same obsession as Google Vice President of Search Product and User Experience Marissa Mayer, Cupcake.

Marissa Mayer is literally obsessed with actual cupcakes, which might have a part to play in the naming of this Google Android development branch, but G1 users want the coding ingredients.

Since Marissa, Google, & T-Mobile have provided little in the way of WHEN Cupcake features will be sent to the masses (memos schmemos), you can bake it yourself from these pretty well spelled out instructions from Koushik Dutta (Thanks to GAB commenter Alex for pointing this out).

Another commenter on Google And Blog, Arron La, installed cupcake to his G1 and provided the screenshots and info that was picked up later by IntoMobile.

Arron noted the following:

  • Local Settings page
  • Animation Effects
  • Notepad Application
  • Global Time Application
  • On Screen Keyboard

*** Arron stated he would do a  guest post on this in greater detail here on Google And Blog as there are questions if he actually did the install since he doesn’t even mention video recording, picture saving from text messages, and other known Cupcake features  ***

What he did not point out was the following:

  • About Phone has a System Updates Option
  • Browser now has a Close Option
  • Browser now has a Find On Page Option
  • There is a Text Encoding Option
  • Pictures is now called Gallery
  • Gallery has a Capture Video Option
  • Home Screen now has a Live Folder Option
  • The Video Quality Option
  • The Sample Soft Keyboard Option
  • Data Synchronization Option is missing from the Settings

Thanks to Ron Amadeo to pointing this out.

What will T-Mobile actually cook in its upcoming update from Cupcake and when exactly?

My sense is that the G1 users here at Google And Blog will know before T-Mobile support or any “memos” are sent.

Thanks Michael, better thought than the vague post Aaron left us with. This clears some things up, hopefully the Cupcake updates mentioned on the branch page will eventually make it’s way to the G1.

according to numerous sources inside of google, Marissa Mayers has nothing to do with the name “Cupcake” being chosen for the dev branch.

    @Ryan,

It was a longshot but its odd that she is also a huge cupcake lover.
