Android 1.5 CupCake release has now been fully merged into Donut which in turn is merged into the Master Android release, so now its just a matter of the final preparations to release it to the current G1 phones.
After adding the CupCake statue next to the Mike Droid robot last week, the question is will it be joined by a Donut one in the near future.
Donut is a new release branch after CupCake which as of now is completely identical to the current CupCake code.
Google Android engineer JBQ affirms that the master release will be going forward the most active and bleeding edge Android codebase after Donut is completed.
I think CupCake will finally be released to the masses by the end of this week as HTC has today released it for the Android Developer 1 phones – ADP1 – with these upgrade instructions.
Now its a matter of getting the instructions finalized and simplified for the OTA update from T-Mobile for the G1 Dream phones.
This is made easier to get by the previous update as you can now simply check by going to SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > SYSTEM UPDATES
Yay now I can have a donut too! I am interested to see what they are going to do with this phone now. So far I love my G1 which I’ve had since before the official launch. Thank you for keeping us up to date with what is comming next
“I think CupCake will finally be released to the masses by the end of this week”
i hope you deal well with disappointment
Things are pointing to sometime this week as early May it will already be baked into the European G2s.
It MUST be sent out to all the G1s before Google IO occurs at the end of May.
FINALLY i was going through GAB withdraws. lol. Cant wait to get my cupcake. MMMMMM Chocolate with sprinkles.
If you like the taste of CupCake I’m hoping that Donut is of the Boston Cream variety.
I have been selective with the posts lately as I am not excited about any of the forthcoming Android phones as they all seem like poor man G1s so far.
My sense things will be getting hot and heavy with Android as Google IO nears.
Not to be weird or anything but… you look really cute in your picture. lol. LOVE ya!
I am so excited for cupcake. I love my g1? But I am excited about being able to type sometimes without having to open the keyboard. Let’s hope it comes this week!
I hope the update will finally happen but somehow I doubt it I feel like a beaten dog who dosent want to obey but has to listen to its owner don’t let us down google
I haven’t been this excited since mid January, oh wait it was February, no it was March…Ok, this is just sad. Tic Toc Tic Toc.
i went ahead updated to cupcake about 3 weeks ago cuz i wanted the on screen keyboard and video recording…..if it would have came out like that from the begining i wonder what kind of updates they would have made
…….
This makes me have hope again! – I hope I’m not dissapointed! =/
Did Cupcake come out or what? I see a whole bunch of sites saying that it came out via OTA update for people in the US and UK.
I tried to go to the “System Updates” setting but it says up to date. Plus, when I look at my 3G I see no uploading or downloading going on to check the servers so I think it doesn’t work. However, I did the old anycut device info shortcut and tried to update from there, still no luck. But at least I see the data being transferred.
Let me know if anyone has been able to get it in the US. I live in Orange County and haven’t received anything yet.
I’m in New York, still haven’t gotten nothing yet… I think its gonna be mid may.
on the tmobile forums it seems that the mods have disappeared when it comes to answering questions about “cupcake”. well my guess is that it wil come in 2-3 weeks as the devs get theres to help make the apps “cupcake compatible”, and vodafone uk people have gotten “cupcake”. i suspect this is due to the fact that there are new android phones being released all over europe. so i guess we americans just have to wait for the proverbial “cupcake”. -.-
I’m in Miami, and have checked regularly like ‘David’, but still nothing either!
Patiently Waiting,
G1 Gal
I’m tired of all of these cupcake release date rumors…this has been happening for months….I’m tired of all this BS..
T-Mobile is pushing it out although I have not received it as of yet.
I’m told its being sent out to 10,000 subscribers a day so its a matter of the update rolling out to your area during the month of May.
Download ahome lite/full if you want an on screen keyboard… it only works on the google search bar but it’s cool to test out. It’s pretty similar to the real one that’ll be released in cupcake. Another plus is the great home custumizations you can make. Get the lite if you don’t want to purchase. its pretty much the same thing as the full. Download the iphone theme and you’ll feel like you’ve got a new phone! I bring this up because it might be awhile waiting for cupcake or donut or w/e it’s being called now. Might aswell have SOMETHING to play with.
Kymberlysy I think ahome is a peice of crap, and who wants isuck theme anyways its a GPHONE!!!! NOT SOME CRAPPY ISUCK!!!!! I shall stay with openhome. Michael please delete her comment. Please and thank you.
@Justin,
Kimberly is entitled to her opinion as long as she is not shilling for the product or throwing out some great deal on Viagra in her comment.
I know the demand for themes on the G1 was a surprised to the Android team but they are packaging that into future release versions such as Donut.
I will agree it is sacrilegious to have an iPhone theme on an Android phone
10,000 subscribers a day?? That will take over 3 months to complete (considering there have been 1 million G1’s sold).
I hope it comes out soon. I am most excited by the camera having a faster shutter speed.
If anyone has got it, or when you get it, post links here to a photo showing the firmware version AND that it is not a rooted or dev phone.
I will be impatiently waiting haha. No I have been waiting since January I could wait another month easily haha.
So your saying they are already sending out the cupcake update to people?
T-Mobile sources claim it started rolling out last week to G1 owners, but T-Mobile ALSO said CupCake would come out earlier this year and we know how that turned out.
The screen shots and video walk throughs I have seen look to be people that installed it manually rather than via an OTA update from T-Mo.
I won’t believe it til I see it and I have not received the update yet, but am confident it will happen by the end of the month.
Yeah, I am pretty sure that T-Mo hasn’t rolled out the OTA for retail G1’s cause I have searched the net and have found nothing on that. It seems only people that have a rooted phone got an OTA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHAqU1Iuhlw).
I’d just say hope for the best and plan for the worst. I plan on receiving it sometime in June. Most likely I will be pleasantly surprised. Plus, I’d rather wait for a quality update rather than rush it and not get all the bugs and things fixed.
Did Google really expect this when they ordered a Cupcake?
They must have some sweet tooth! http://bit.ly/lH6ZA
I just thought I’d update everyone! I’m in the UK and this morning I received the Cupcake update! (1.5 Firmware)
I got tired of waiting and downloaded Cupcake installation package last weekend. It was a simple install. My experience is described on my blog. I have a regular G1 (non-rooted).
