G1 RC33 Update Says No Thanks to T-Mobile in the Contributions List

Posted on Feb 8, 2009 by Michael Martin in Open Handset Alliance, Service Providers, gPhones | 7 Comments

When looking at the Contributors list on the G1 phone after the RC33 update one company was removed, T-Mobile.

I received the RC33 OTA update for my G1 phone Sunday afternoon in San Diego, California and it took only about 10 minutes to install and reboot.

I noticed all the improvements and changes as noted would be included within the RC33 update, plus the fact that the Android Market no longer has BETA next to it.

I had another G1 phone that was still on RC30 so I went exploring to see any other differences.

On the G1 with the RC30 update T-Mobile is listed as a contributor right before Qualcomm but in the RC33 update T-Mobile is not even mentioned.

Does it mean T-Mobile didn’t do anything for this update or a frustration by a programmer slipping in his/her displeasure that something wasn’t released sooner and/or with more features?

In the end is this unintentional, a boring “Easter Egg”, or a slap in the face to T-Mobile?

i think that t-mobile had nothing to do with the update. i think that Android just sent this to t-mobile to cool peoples jets so that they know cupcake will be released in the future. its just a matter of time til the ultimate cupcake arrives, so until then we will all have to wait. to me it seems that t-mobile has nothing to do with the updates, they just get them directly from the android company.

    @ James,

I know, who actually looks at the Contributions list, but its an odd omission.

As far linkbait, great if that results, but for it to truly be a linkbait play it should have had a top ten list, with some controversial pictures, and a HUGE blaring DIGG ME button at the end ;)

Ok, I am now posotive that T-Mobile had nothing to do with this update. I have an unlocked g1 on AT&T and have been without data for a while but I got it back today 2/10 and after a few min. Of the phone being on I got a little popup for a system update….I was very confused because I was under the impression that I was (being on AT&T) could not get updates OTA but I clicked “update now” anyway and it took about 5 or 6 min. To update and I checked the build and it was indeed rc33. Because of that I think that this was a google pushed update. I also noticed the “System Updates” tab in “settings->About Phone” so I hope this means tht future OTA updates will be availible to me. ,Justin

My understanding from recent information is that these RC updates are actually from HTC.

HTC said back in December that updates were ready for the G1 but they were waiting on (& pressuring) T-Mobile to release them.

May be T-Mobile has nothing to do with this update or they have not contributed in this update anyways. And yes, why T-mobile should bother about any firmware updates? Its just a service provider!. I guess Google and HTC are the one who should think about updates.

Google is only interested in supporting features that enable Google applications and services. For example, the G1 eMail app has never worked properly eventhrough they were provided detials about serious problems.

The latest RC33 release does nothing to fix these problems.

But, RC33 does add the “location” feature that is just another example of how Google respects personal privacy … NOT !!!
