The simple way is to go to SETTINGS > SD Card & Phone Storage > Then select FACTORY DATA RESET
Alternate way is to hold the home and the RED button for approximately 20 seconds, once you see the triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the G1 press Alt+W (can also press Home+Back to reboot)
Recent Android updates brought protection to the SD card but also a frustration as to access it when connecting to your computer you will notice a USB icon in your top notification bar, finger slide this and select MOUNT.
You can disable many features to extend your battery such as disabling GPS, Bluetooth, 3G, Synchronization, & WiFi while also decreasing your screen brightness and timeout.
You can disable 3G by going to SETTINGS > WIRELESS CONTROLS > MOBILE NETWORKS > Select USE ONLY 2G NETWORKS
The best current method is to put those songs in these specific folders on the SD card:
Hold the Home key to pull up a pop-up window of up to six of your recently used applications.
Go to the actual text message thread with the text that was received, upon which place your finger and hold. You will then be presented the option to FORWARD.
BEFORE losing your G1 type: *#06# to get your unique IMEI 13-digit number or go to SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > STATUS. This number is what T-Mobile can use to track down your G1 if lost or stolen.

How do you turn off apps on the g1 phone?? Probably a stupid question but there seems to be no way to turn off active apps.

yes it does delete your contacts unless you have them on your sim card
Ive flashed my phone with a few different roms, some of which required a wipe/reset. All your contacts are kept since they're stored online at google. If you login to your gmail account you can see your contacts listed.
But everything else (settings, apps, sms, phone logs etc) you'll lose. I use mybackup pro to backup/restore. Its not free, but easily worth the couple of bucks it costs.

Simply long press on the image within the text message and a pop up will provide you the option to save.
