Android Cupcake Update on the G1 in April More Than Just Rumors

Posted on Mar 11, 2009 by Michael Martin in Service Providers, gPhones | 20 Comments

A T-Mobile Spokesperson told Pocket-lint that G1 owners will get an OTA firmware update with Cupcake features sometime in April.

There have been Cupcake rumors and hearsay several times since last year of when it will be officially provided onto the G1, if at all.

This is the first that an alleged direct quote came from someone at T-Mobile, of which the spokesperson stated:

We will be offering G1 users the firmware update sometime in April

We can’t say whether this will be connected with the launch of the HTC Magic as we aren’t aware of what alternations if any they are making to the operating system

The features of this update would include:

  • Onscreen Keyboard
  • Video Recording
  • Voice Recorder
  • Stereo Bluetooth

I am assuming this is just for the US and I have never heard of pocket-lint.com before so I am skeptical but hopeful, perhaps like Charlie Brown.

Now will this really happen or will Lucy pull the football/cupcake away again?

*** I believe Lucy will be pulling the ball away on this one as I sense this being an early April Fools joke ***

Fantastic news! I did think this might happen when the Magic was announced, but now there’s some tangible evidence I can’t wait.

In other news today, the UK Market will have paid apps as of tomorrow!

UK paid for Market was launched late Wednesday evening-just downloaded a few apps myself. There’s a mixture of apps in both USD and GBP.

It seems to buy US apps you need a credit card, whereas the UK apps are fine with my debit card. A bit frustrating really, I hope this changes…

Until there is a confirmation of the supposed T-Mo spokesperson talking about an update beyond what some random site posted then I would say its a Linkbait April Fools joke from Pocket-Lint.

I really cant tell if its a joke. My guess is it actually just might happen. Developers in XDA forums (JF was one of them) stated that if the cupcake updates for the G1 does not come out when the magic comes out (which is announced in April in the UK) then they themselves will extract the cupcake updates from the magic themselves if someone can get their hands on to one and just do what they always do, modified updates. I tried to look for that post that JF (Jesus Freak) saying this, but cant find it. read it awhile back when someone complained taht the magic will steal all the G1’s light.

Hey Michael- Just wanted to drop by and say great seeing you in Austin! Next time we’ll have to do an extended meetup, the weekend doesn’t give you enough time to get to see everyone. Hope you have a safe trip back!

Pocket-lint is a well-established and popular UK technology blog and isn’t a site prone to dishing out joke press releases, unsubstatiated rumours and other fluff like that (although I have to admit they all to eager to please their sponsors with glowing reviews and irritating advertising). Basically they are the Gizmodo or Engadget equivalent this side of the Atlantic.

Here in the UK T-Mobile didn’t provide the nice shiny RC33 update that includes Voice Search, Latitude and a host of other extras; instead we got RC9 which consists basically of the bug fixes but not the features from RC33. It’s quite possible (or at least I hope) T-Mobile UK are planning some kind of “catch-up” update for us which may include extra features that have been developed since the RC33 build.

    @GK,

Thank you for this insight as on the other side of the pond (actually on the coast of the other pond here in San Diego California) – I have never heard of pocket-lint.com before.

Just fishy that no T-Mobile spokesperson stood up to lay claim to this “official” statement & those in the US declare it simply a rumor and not true.

I do think the G1 will get some more CupCake elements around the April time frame but most likely not the whole CupCake enchilada.

I think that the time period for G1 updates on reveals the incompetence of Google in this market. I think they underestimated the challenge.

T-Mobile announces April 21st “private launch event” in NYC
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Apr 9th 2009 at 12:31PM

Well well well. Well. What do we have here? Apparently the cats and kittens over at T-Mobile have something special planned on Tuesday, April 21st. We’ve just gotten a very brief email letting us know that something was going down, but without any other detail. Obviously our gadget-alarms started clanging, and the way we see it we’ve only got a few things to get excited about. Will we see the launch of Cupcake? Could this be the official US unveiling of the Magic? Or perhaps we’ll finally get to see the new Sidekick which just hit the FCC. Look — anything is possible, but whatever happens, we’ll be there. What do you guys think is in store?
