G1 & Android 2008 Assessment- You Really Like Me – Do You?

Posted on Dec 22, 2008 by Michael Martin in gPhones | 10 Comments

Courtesy of Android CentralIt’s the end of year and everyone is having their best of 2008 so lets see where the G1 and Android stand.

Consumer Reports ranked the G1 as the 11th best smartphone behind The Samsung Blackjack II being number 1!

Although technically tied with the iPhone at 7th place, its still odd such a low ranking but yet they put the G1 on the cover (in SILVER no less).

Android Central member Dr Tyrell provided this cover of the G1 on Consumer Reports as well the ranking information.

TechCrunch Best of 2008 reader survey results show the G1 as the 2nd best device of the year behind the iPhone.

Cnet had the G1 tied for the best cell phone of 2008 from the user ratings.

The ULTIMATE assessment is if someone gets buried with their G1 as reported with their Bluetooth and cell phones fully charged (for people to call them?!?) – although with the G1 that would only last a day.

What everyone is waiting for is the next evolution of the Android phone and this weekend some weak rumors on the G2 were circulated.

I do believe there will be a G2 device but arriving in April 2009 at the earliest with ASUS or HTC as the most likely manufacturers.

The latest rumor is that the G2 will have an everlasting battery, simple integration, immediate connection, all while being low cost – as the latest artist rendering of the G2 shows below:

I’m not surprised. I invested in the potential of the G1. I think we need to wait for better apps, which will probably be available for $ rather than free. Until then, the G1 really isn’t anything to write home about.

    @ Matt,

I think you are spot on as far as the truly great apps waiting for early 2009 to launch when the Android Market allows paid apps.

The G1 with the anticipated January “Over The Air” update containing video recording, on screen keyboard, and other improvements plus Adobe putting out FLASH for Android would finally make it a device “to write home about”.

Android is a great OS waiting for a device to happen, the G1 isn’t it. I went through 3 of them before refusing shipment on the 4th and having my contract reverted back. Not a device to waste a 2-year contract extension on. Loose fitting battery cover; loose screen mechanism, and more creaks than a haunted mansion…

Benji your obviously an idiot to be able to go through 3 of them in this short time, and lose battery cover!!!!!??? It is the strongest I’ve ever seen on any device it is actually pretty difficult to take off, creaks yes, it needs a tweak in the hinge mechanism to easily solve that permanatly(a very simple operation) but the device has amazing potential and I will be extremely sad if the g2 has no physical keyboard because we all know they are better than any virtual 1 could ever be, I could care less about the thickness. it seems people don’t even care about quality now they just want somthing thin, defective and shiny w/ an Apple logo on it. The iphone is nothing but a toy for people w/ an IQ of 6. Sorry 4 the rant I just hate apple :)

The line up for the coming update seems on point to addressing my current list of disappointments. I am amazed that the upgrade list is so inclusive, if they follow through I will be satisfied finally except for the 3G snaphooo. When is Tmobile going to deliver 3G

My wife is not a tech connoisseur but it was time to get rid of the Razr. We’re T-Mobile people and, while I was able to jailbreak my iphone I didn’t want her to have to troubleshoot anything.
Lo and behold the G1. She loves it.
    Best birthday present ever.
She’s on it all the time.
I think she will only enjoy it more as new stuff comes down the pike but for an upgrade from a traditional handheld, it’s really great.

While I love my G1, there is no doubt it was rushed to market with a number of key features missing. That said, I am pleased to see that the coming “Cupcake” update will take care of the largest majority of them. With Flash added to the mix, I think the G1 will be a pretty full featured device. Not perfect, but pretty damn good for a first foray into Android. Even Apple has remade their device a number of times since their first attempt at the mobile market.
I also got my wife one, and although she is far from the Geek I am, she has really enjoyed using it.

to the person who said the battery cover was weak…i actually et scared taking off the cover because its on so tight i dont wanna break it…loose? really?

if the “G2″ a G1 with no keyboard why would you call it a G2? more like the G1.5 just like the apple 3g…what did they change about the first phone besides adding 3g? hence why its not the iphone 2
