I believe the creation of a defacto branded Google Phone with the Nexus One was a misstep both for Android & Google itself.
I have been an early supporter of Android as the young upstart open mobile platform versus the Apple iPhone with Android being backed by major mobile players in the Open Handset Alliance, principally Google.
I just want to be sure this leader of the mobile rebel alliance does not become Darth Vader or to another extreme an Edsel.

Yesterday Google revealed one of the worst kept secrets in both the Android and mobile phone world in general with the Nexus One, but behind the scenes Google is soliciting the FCC to administer white spaces.
My feeling is that for a true Google SUPER phone it would need to completely bypass the mobile service providers by allowing VoIP anywhere calls which the recently freed up white spaces could provide.
Google stated in 2007 that, “white spaces — could be used to expand Internet access through low power personal devices, akin to Wi-Fi. Best of all, new spectrum sensing technologies can ensure that this spectrum could be used for mobile broadband service without interfering one bit with television signals.”

The Nexus One that’s being tagged as the GooglePhone is set to be subsidized by T-Mobile down to $199 starting January 5th, 2010 but this then wouldn’t be the first Google Phone nor what I would consider it anything truly groundbreaking.
The Nexus One does have impressive specs and does come unlocked although I am sure with the T-Mobile subsidy reported by ABC News it would be confined to their network only, but to truly be a stand alone Google Phone it needs to break free of ANY mobile carrier.

Just like Bo Jackson in the 1980s (All Star in Baseball, Football, & unstoppable in Tecmo Bowl) the iPhone can do a lot of things well, but they still don’t know Diddley.
Verizon has pointed out there is a lot the iDont but the Droid & Android does.
Recently Google unveiled the Eclair Android 2.0 SDK for developers just before Verizon officially announced the Droid series today which the Motorola Droid will have Eclair 2.0.
One of the highlights of what Android Eclair does is the Google Maps Navigation system which the iPhone at this time iDont.

The iPhone has been able to virtually ignore Android up to this point but now it can not Avoid the Droid with Verizon hyping its upcoming Motorola Android phone and comparing it to the iDont.
The initial Android phones from HTC & Samsung are decidedly lackluster but were great inroads of progress toward competing with and ultimately supplanting the iPhone.
Its not even a year ago as the HTC Dream G1 became the first Android enabled phone to be released publicly on October 22nd and now I have listed at least 50 Android phones expected in the near future.
