Australian News Claims G2 Will Be A Software Upgrade for the G1 Phone

Posted on Feb 4, 2009 by Michael Martin in Service Providers, gPhones | 7 Comments

An Australian Tech News site Smarthouse states that the G2 may be a software upgrade for the first generation G1 Android phone launching in Asia on Monday February 16th.

This comes across to me as an odd and confusing statement.

The Smarthouse article starts with the obvious question Asian & Australian customers would ask Optus as to why should they buy the G1 when the G2 should be available relatively soon.

The G2 is assumed to be first publicly presented at the coming GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona which starts on the same exact day as the Optus G1 launch date.

The article answers this with:

It emerged that the answer may lie in the fact that G2 may possibly be a software upgrade that may be downloaded to the launched Google phone.”

HUH?

Are they saying that the G2 will just be an Android codebase name or more likely are they suggesting that when the G2 device comes out that T-Mobile will provide the G1 with the exact same code as an upgrade?

In my experience the term upgrade is usually associated with a FEE while an update usually means FREE.

This could also bring up the Cupcake controversy if its fully ported to the G2 while leaving the G1 behind, so perhaps there is some snake oil salesmanship involved to get people to buy the G1 and not wait for the G2.

What do you think they meant?

I do find it a bit curious that they are releasing the G1 when the alleged G2 has been rumored to be released within the year. But if it were just an upgrade/update….what of all the pictures of the Sapphire/G2??

This is all a bit strange and baffling. I also find it strange that RC33 is being released between the 5 and 15th…the day before this launch… which really makes me think that cupcake is either no where near being ready…or maybe it is in fact going to be an upgrade that they’ll try and charge us for…

the publication you are referring to, smarthouse, has zero credibility – they got the HTC dream carrier wrong, wrongly said a few days ago that telstra was going to bring the g2 in. this is just more ill-informed nonsense from them. the owner of the site has been busted for wholesale plagiarism – search for david richards and media watch.

Ignore them, like everyone in australia does.

Just a bizarre statement all around, not sure exactly what they are even implying.

I guess it does show a true lack of knowledge and/or deceit on their part.

It sounds to me like they are just trying to make some headlines and get attention. Personally I will wait for a more credible source before I believe this one.
