I am leaving this morning from San Diego to San Francisco to cover the Android sessions of Google IO – Google’s once a year Developer Conference.
The first Google IO was last year but this is the first since an Android device has been released and as such is very Android focused.
I will be meeting with Taylor Wimberly of AndroidAndMe who was also invited by Google to cover the event.

I wish you lots of fun at Google IO… I’m a bit jealous
Would be nice if you could ask the google-guys about the status of the bluetooth-API. We’re developing an android app/device-bundle which (should) support several different devices and need a complete API badly.

Android engineers told me that obviously they put stereo Bluetooth in Cupcake, but as well there will be improvements with Bluetooth in Donut but they are not allowed to tell me specifics as to what.
Please ask them precisely what they plan to do or can do about the limited battery life of the device?
Android engineer Jeffrey Sharkey led a session called, Coding for Life – Battery Life, That is but that relates to creating apps than for the end user.
The Ion Phone they gave us at Google IO is amazingly light and the battery lasts MUCH longer.
Ask about flash.
And I know lots of folks also want to know about app2sd or whatever it’s called.
All the Android engineers groaned and rolled their eyes when I ask about Flash.
They say its out of their hands but they see the limited processing and internal memory of the G1 preventing FULL FLASH support.
Its on Adobe to deliver as they promised by the end of the year, so it will come from them as a separate download and not as an OTA update.
I figured most of that stuff, including the eye roll, but I’d hoped they might have a little more inside info. Oh well.
No word about App2SD or whatever it was called?
Did you get the free “Android device”? I heard they distributed over 4,000 to the lucky attendees. Was it the Magic? And, how cool is it that they gave 30 days free unlimited and thousands of minutes? Wish I was there…
It is pretty sweet as I always said I NEED a physical keyboard to avoid the fat finger frustration but the one on this Ion Phone is really responsive and even a iPhone fanboy says its at least as good as that on the iPhone.
Hey mike, could you please ask them about enhancing app capabilities via multitouch. Also I would like to know what they think about third party android builds such as jf and dudes, and the overall rise in rooting. Thanks mike! Have fun!
The Android engineers said the G1 will NEVER have true multi touch as the current hack to do so is just a limited version.
No mention about Apple blocking them from using it.
As far as rooting the phones publicly they don’t mind it and privately they told me they love some of builds like JesusFreke and welcome those advancements.
